We’re proud to announce our participation at GASTECH 2025, with a technical paper co-authored alongside France LNG Shipping and GAZOCEAN.
The session, titled “Retrofitting LNG carriers with Wind-Assisted Propulsion: A viable path to carbon neutrality”, will explore how wind propulsion can play a decisive role in decarbonizing LNG shipping.
In the pursuit of carbon neutrality by 2050, the maritime industry faces increasing regulatory challenges and the need for innovative solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. France LNG Shipping, owner of LNG carriers managed by GAZOCEAN, has decided to conduct a case study for an upcoming retrofit of its fleet with wind-assisted propulsion technology developed by OceanWings. This paper presents a case study of an LNG carrier owned by France LNG Shipping and managed by GAZOCEAN, undergoing a retrofit with wind-assisted propulsion technology developed by OceanWings.
The proposed LNGC retrofit aims to integrate a class-approved, passive and rigid wingsails with minimal operational impact, ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks (ETS, Fuel EU…) while optimizing fuel savings. A key focus is on achieving these modifications within the scheduled regulatory dry-docking periods, making the solution both practical and cost-effective.
This study will explore the technical and regulatory constraints of such a retrofit, the potential fuel savings, associated costs, and the necessary timeline for implementation. It will also address how this can be scaled to any membrane type LNG carrier. By bridging sustainability with operational feasibility, this approach demonstrates how LNG carriers can transition towards carbon-neutral operations while maintaining efficiency and reliability.
The presentation will take place on Wednesday, 10 September, from 14:30 to 16:00.
